11CHG 

Year 11 Challenge                                                                         MCERT / NCEA Level 2

Course Statement:

The Challenge course is designed to develop well-rounded young men who fully participate in school life and who realise their full potential. The course challenges boys to be the best they can be across a number of areas, particularly the outdoors. 11CHG will help develop skills that can be used in many aspects of school and personal life, such as determination, courage, resilience and organisation. 

Costs: 

Students are expected to supply their own outdoor clothing, hiking boots, and food, for overnight activities. The school has a number of items the students can borrow. A full list of gear needed is supplied before the course begins. The cost of the course is $120.

Prerequisites:

This course is available to BOYS only.  The course has limited spaces. 11CHG is by selection. Boys should apply through their House Leader for this course.

Topics Covered:

Outdoor Education:

     Prepare for, complete, and evaluate tramping and camping. They will learn valuable survival skills, land navigation and packing and using essential camping equipment

     4 overnight camps and 2 one-day hikes will be undertaken during the course.

Fitness and Wellbeing:

     Weekly fitness and well-being sessions will be completed. This is a combition of a running circuit and high intensity interval training.

Literacy Skills:

     Reading and critically analysing thematic texts: short stories, novellas, poems, and song lyrics will be undertaken throughout the year. The boys investigate their own Whakapapa (heritage) and present to the class. 

Personal Development:

     Identity, self-esteem, role models, resilience and life & career pathways will be examined and reflected on.

Assessments 

Assessments take place through the course of the year.

All NCEA assessments are internally assessed.

12ODE: NCEA Level 2 Outdoor Education 

Note: The outdoor education component of 11CHG can be used towards the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.

Reading - Boys start to read short stories as a class and reflect upon them.

Outdoor Education- Skills continued and extended into multi-day hikes
