11MUS | Year 11 Music MCert |
Course Statement: | This is a course for students who want to create and compose original music and progress in their personal musical skills. This course challenges students to be curious about music’s role in our world and teaches them about how composers have created music in different styles throughout history. This course aims to give young musicians the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in a variety of musical contexts. Students who take this course are encouraged to take lessons with a private instrumental or vocal tutor, either here at Macleans or outside of school. They are also encouraged to join an extracurricular music group at school, and to get involved in festivals and competitions throughout the year. |

Subject Overview
Term 1
Composing Through Time
In this unit, students will explore the history of music through a compositional lens. They will have the opportunity to play music together and create original musical ideas based on what they learn.
Term 2
Songwriting
In this exciting unit, students team up with the contemporary music class to form bands and write an original song. Students will explore chord progressions, lyric and melody writing, and even get to experience recording and editing their song.
Term 3
Weird & Wonderful
In this unit, students will discover three musical styles that have pushed the boundaries of musical composition: Minimalism, Impressionism and Serialism. They will then choose a style and research it further, exploring what composers did to make their music unique. Finally, students will create an original piece in their chosen style, showcasing what they have learned.
Term 4
Settling the Score
To finish out the year, students will prepare for a formal recital, showcasing the music they have been working on throughout the year. Students may choose to perform as a soloist or as part of a group on any instrument they would like. They will also review the music literacy concepts they have learned throughout the year to prepare for their final exam on score reading.
Pathway
Music education is invaluable in preparing for any career. Music courses give students the opportunity to practise problem solving, communication skills, cooperation and advanced analysis skills. Students who practise music are more able to handle complex issues and situations, and they understand the importance of effort and creativity in all aspects of their lives. Music students are resilient and are able to find many different solutions to a problem.
