Course prerequisites
The student can read articles, literary prose and reports concerned with contemporary problems where writers adopt particular attitudes and viewpoints.
The student can write clear, detailed texts on a range of subjects, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.

Course Statement: | This course supports students in achieving the literacy co-requisites (CAA). Students will develop the English language skills necessary for higher-level study, with a focus on reading and writing. The course places particular emphasis on understanding and responding to a wide range of written, visual, and oral texts. Students will also build their ability to think critically, interpret meaning, and communicate ideas clearly in both formal and creative contexts. |
Prerequisites: | Success at 02SENG, 03SENG, 10ESI or 10ESL level or placement as a result of ESOL testing. |
Topics Covered: | Formal Writing – letters, emails, reports, opinion pieces, articles and essays. Creative Writing – personal recounts, descriptive writing, and narratives. Writing Process Skills Brainstorming, planning, drafting, peer reviewing, editing, and proofreading. Audience Awareness – adapting tone, style, and vocabulary for different audiences and purposes. Coherence and Cohesion – using connectives, transitions, and logical sequencing to improve flow. Exam Focused Writing – practising timed responses for CAA Literacy requirements.
Reading Skills Understanding and identifying main ideas and supporting details. Making inferences and drawing conclusions from texts. Summarising and paraphrasing information accurately. Analysing language features such as figurative language, tone, and mood. Recognising text structures (narrative, persuasive, informative). Interpreting and comparing visual texts such as advertisements, infographics, and photographs. Developing skimming and scanning strategies for locating key information quickly. Evaluating the writer’s purpose, audience, and point of view. Expanding vocabulary through reading a range of genres including short stories, news articles, poems, and speeches. Building comprehension through guided reading logs and current events discussions. Film Study – exploring film techniques, themes, and character development.
Language Development – vocabulary building, grammar, sentence structure, paragraphing, and editing for clarity and accuracy.
