Course Statement
This course helps students strengthen their English language skills in preparation for the CAA Literacy requirements. The main focus is on developing reading and writing abilities, with particular attention to improving grammatical accuracy. Students will practise both formal and creative writing, while also learning to think critically about what they read, identify key messages, and express their own ideas clearly and confidently.
Writing Skills
Students begin by learning the writing process, including generating ideas, planning, drafting, reviewing peer work, editing, and proofreading. They then develop skills in formal writing, such as letters, emails, short reports, and opinion pieces. Emphasis is placed on audience awareness—selecting the right tone, style, and vocabulary for different readers and purposes. Students also work on improving coherence and flow by using linking words, clear sentences, and logical sequencing. Exam preparation is included, with timed writing tasks to meet the CAA Literacy requirements.
Reading Skills
Students build a range of reading skills, starting with identifying main ideas and supporting details in texts. They practise making inferences from clues, summarising and paraphrasing information, and analysing language features. Lessons also cover recognising different text types, including narratives, persuasive writing, and information texts. Students develop efficiency with skimming and scanning, and learn to evaluate the writer’s purpose and viewpoint. Vocabulary growth is supported through a variety of genres, and comprehension is strengthened through guided reading activities and discussions on current events.
