13ENA

13ENA - English (Extension) - NCEA Level 3

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Irving.

13ENA is an academically-demanding extension of the 12ENG NCEA Level 3 programme that cleads to sitting the Scholarship English exam at the end of the year.  Students should be carrying through Merit, if not Excellence grades from NCEA Level 2 English.

The texts for study will be pitched at Level 8 of the New Zealand Curriculum and there is one change to the internal standards offered in 13ENG: 3.8 Critical Texts replaces 3.4 Writing Portfolio.

Students will be encouraged to read broadly and develop clear lines of argument in writing. An important component of the course is to be able to manage and write about the complexity in the texts we read. Being able to critically evaluate the merits of various arguments, and discuss the extent to which certain issues are evident and significant in our reading, is important.  Another area of the course is to form an understanding of how different readings can be made of texts, and how these readings can offer new interpretations.

This is an ‘approved subject’ for University Entrance.

Recommended Prior Learning

Prerequiste: UE Lieracy, and at least 18 credits at Merit, if not Excellence level in NCEA Level 2 English.
